Brooklyn Birthing Center
Katherine Abelson
2183 Ocean Ave
Brooklyn,
NY 11229
"Prior to becoming a midwife, I had been employed as a nurse in Labor and Delivery at a major New York hospital. Fortunately, hospitals yielded to the women's movement to the extent that most have renovated their obstetric units with birthing rooms that look cozier(if you can imagine your room littered with IV poles and a massive fetal monitor). Unfortunately, hospital policy still holds to the following routines whether the laboring women is low or high risk: 1) Nothing to eat or drink, 2) IV, 3) Bedrest with continuous fetal monitor, 4) Seperation of baby from mother shortly after birth, 5) Wrap the baby and let Mom (possibly dad) hold for a few minutes (to bond), then off to the nursery for OBSERVATION!--Katherine Abelson, CNM
Listen to what the women has to say; they know themselves better than anyone else. This is the philosophy that I base my midwifery practice on. I learn from mothers and I discover new lessons from every birth. Birth is a sacred, individual experience for each family, and I understand that the care and support that I give is remembered for a lifetime. --Yuliya Milshteyn, CNM

AquaNatal Birth Center
Joyce Moxley Thomas, CPM, LM
13768 Roswell Avenue
Chino,
CA 91710
Mother to four, Midwife to many!
Joyce’s love of caring for “mommies & babies” started when she was a 15 year old “candy-striper” at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, where she received her nurses training. But she knew then she didn’t want to be a nurse. At 22 Joyce, as a young US Navy wife, started working with an Australian midwife and together they provided homebirth services to US Navy wives in Connecticut. After moving to San Diego, Joyce had a private homebirth practice, working with Dr. Richard Butcher a well-known homebirth physician at the time. Together they authored the California Midwifery Pilot Project, HMPP #148 (1983), which would have trained & licensed midwives in 3-year community college-based programs 10 years before the midwives won licensing after decades of persecution & prosecution in California. The present licensing law is based in part on HMPP #148. Joyce and “Dr. B” helped over 200 homebirth babies into the world in the San Diego area 1978 – 1983. The C-section rate was less than 4%.
