Week 18
Your Pregnancy At Week 18
Overview
Congratulations -- you're on week 18!
Physical Changes

You are probably feeling more movement now as well as fitting very nicely into the cute maternity clothes you bought or borrowed.

Emotional Feelings

Finally feeling pregnant. Excited to connect with your baby any time you can. Also, anticipating your fetal survey ultrasound. This ultrasound checks your babies growth, organs and possibly the gender.

About Baby
Your baby measures about 5.5 inches from crown to rump and weighs about 5.25 ounces.   It can yawn, stretch and make facial expressions, even frown. The baby will suck if its lips are stroked and it can swallow, and even get the hiccups. Taste buds are beginning to develop and can distinguish sweet from bitter tastes. Your baby’s retinas have become sensitive to light, so if a bright light is shined on your abdomen, baby will probably move to shield its eyes.
Things To Consider
During your ultrasound, they will also be looking at where your placenta is implanted. If it is implanted on or near the cervix this is called Placenta Previa. Placenta Previa can be a  serious situation especially if it is implanted directly on your cervix blocking your baby’s exit for the birth. If this is the case, you may have already noticed some vaginal bleeding. True Placenta Previa is cause for a Caesarean Section at term. If your placenta is near your cervix, try not to be too alarmed, it usually moves away from your cervix as your uterus grows. You will probably have a follow up ultrasound at a later date.
