Week 4
Your Pregnancy At Week 4
Overview
This is about the time you would be expecting your next period. If you are late…you know what to do! Most over the counter pregnancy tests are as accurate as the one in your OB’s or Midwife’s office so you can feel confidant in the results.

Positive? Congratulations!!!! You are about to embark on an amazing adventure!

Negative? Don’t give up. Remember you only have a 20% chance of getting pregnant each month.
Physical Changes
You probably don’t feel too much different than you did last month. You may feel breast tenderness or feel like you’re going to start your period…but you don’t. You may experience light spotting, which could be caused by the embryo implanting in the uterus.
Emotional Feelings
Anywhere from complete elation to “Oh my gosh…what have I done?” All is very normal. You may second guess your decision to start a family now that you are pregnant. It may take a little time to adjust, especially if this pregnancy is a surprise. Just remember you have nine months to get used to the idea.
About Baby
At 4 weeks your baby is about 1mm long. Your baby starts implanting into the lining of your uterus. The uterus will house your baby for the remaining weeks of your pregnancy week by week. Your baby will begin looking like a tiny tadpole. This week your baby's amniotic cavity starts to form. From this cavity the placenta will grow and nourish your baby throughout your pregnancy. During this time your baby's vital organs begin to develop. From here on out your baby undergoes a critical period in its development. It is very important that you avoid exposing your body or your baby to harmful substances that can damage your baby.
Things To Consider
Watch your nutrition and continue your prenatal vitamins and folic acid. Make sure you are drinking at least 6-8 8 ounce glasses of water a day. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetable and get 60-80 grams of protein a day. You only need 300 extra calories a day to grow a healthy baby, so though you may feel the need to eat for two, resist packing in extra calories that you will have to shed after the birth or could cause risks later on in your pregnancy or birth.
